Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first TV roles were two times as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on the ABC sitcom Roseanne, the character portrayed by her mother. The family did not allow her to act until she was an adult because of how stress can impact on their child. Perry admitted that she was shy to act during high school, but started doing shows in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred to the university from Boston University. Perry was able to begin her acting career with New York after graduation, performing in minor roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry come back to California and find work as a stage actress. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. In the year 2015, she was alongside Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer-winning drama Anna Christie. The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, she had her own recurring part on the ABC film Scandal featuring her father. Also, she was cast on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory spin-off Young Sheldon as a version younger than Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. The character was assigned to her by way of audition even though she is a relative to the role.
